The “Taylored” approach…

Having had 2 children herself and working with many women during their pregnancy, postnatal and menopausal journeys, Emily is able to recognise the aches, pains and challenges that affect our bodies during these key periods of change and beyond. As our hormones fluctuate during different stages of life, Emily can advise and provide guidance and treatment where needed, for the physical symptoms that can arise from these different phases of life.

With her relaxed and friendly manner, Emily’s approachable nature allows our clients to feel comfortable and at ease – confident in the holistic approach to their concerns. Emily’s specialist skills and experience allow her to quickly assess and diagnose – providing expert treatment as well as practical advice and guidance, ensuring your rehabilitation programme is tailored to you.

Pregnancy related aches and pains

…including Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP), Back pain, Rib pain and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

All these symptoms and more are commonplace during pregnancy as your body adapts and adjusts to accommodate your growing bump. Physiotherapy treatment can help alleviate or manage these symptoms as well as help to prepare your body for childbirth and the early postnatal period.

Advice, education and hands on treatment as well as specific exercises tailored to your specific needs is key in the management of Antenatal pain.

Postnatal recovery

…including Perineal/Episiotomy scar pain, post caesarean section rehabilitation, pelvic floor dysfunction and Diastasis Recti (tummy muscle separation).

Using hands-on treatment combined with specific rehabilitation exs for postural stability muscles and core as well as Pelvic floor exercises – to help restore your function and strength post childbirth.

Bladder dysfunction

…including symptoms such as urinary incontinence – leaking when coughing/sneezing or not getting to the toilet in time, or needling to empty the bladder with increased urgency or frequency. Other issues can involve incomplete emptying, as well as Overactive Bladder (OAB) and Bladder Pain Syndrome.

Whilst urinary leakage is common, it is not normal and can be effectively treated in most cases. Physiotherapy treatment involves education, consideration of lifestyle impact as well as Pelvic floor re-education and training to improve muscle strength and relaxation

Bowel dysfunction

…can include leakage of faeces, sudden urgency to pass a stool and/or constipation and incomplete emptying of the bowel.

These symptoms again are common and can have a huge impact on a Woman’s mental and physical health and quality of life. Effective treatment can help to improve or eliminate these symptoms – Lifestyle changes and Pelvic floor re-education and training to improve muscle strength and relaxation are key components of physiotherapy management for bowel dysfunction

Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP)

A common but often under-diagnosed condition, which can, but not exclusively, occur as a result of childbirth and is also common during peri/menopause as a result of reducing oestrogen levels. Symptoms occur when the bladder, uterus or rectum lean into the vaginal walls causing a dragging or heaviness sensation in the pelvis.

Physiotherapy can help with aching and associated pelvic pain related to POP as well as bladder and bowel dysfunction due to the prolapsed structures.

Perimenopause /menopause related symptoms

…including joint pains, sexual dysfunction and bladder and bowel issues.Everyone’s experience of the perimenopause and menopause is individual, so its important to have a treatment and management programme that is specific to your needs and personal goals.

Recovery from Gynaecological surgery

…including hysterectomy, pelvic floor repair and Endometriosis treatment procedures.
Physiotherapy treatment can help to improve mobility, reduce pain and restore normal pelvic floor function.

Pelvic Pain/Painful Intercourse

…including endometriosis, vulvodynia, vaginismus, pain inserting tampons etc.
Tailored physiotherapy treatment can help reduce pelvic floor muscle tension and aid relaxation to help ease pain and improve mobility and function. There can be a number of different causes for these issues and the selected treatment approach will depend on the source of the problem.

Testimonials

After having two children I really struggled with my pelvic floor. Not only did I leak when I coughed, but it got so bad that I couldn’t walk the children to school as I would leak too much. I saw specialists, including a consultant, but it was only when I saw Emily did real change occur. Previously I would always have to have a spare pair of underwear with me as I frequently leaked, including at work. This made me really self conscious as there had been times when my bladder seemingly leaked spontaneously, which went through to my underwear and trousers.

Within 9 months of working with Emily, I am now able to walk the children to school without leaking, take part in more active games with my children and even make it through most days without having to change my underwear. Having been so self conscious and aware that I could not control my leaking, I have gone from stopping doing things I want to, to enjoying trying new things, including power walking and the occasional jog! Most importantly I feel I now understand how to manage my pelvic floor, which means that I no longer feel like a leaky bladder is just something I have to put up with as a mum. What amazes me most is that Emily proved to me that there is something that can be done to help with leaking and that I no longer have to live with a constant worry.

If you have a leaky bladder, make sure you see Emily even if you have tried other things before. She is amazing and I honestly believe her input will make a real difference to your life.…”
